In the Borderland

The small municipality of Parikkala, in South Karelia, Finland, is located in the immediate vicinity of the Eastern border. Russia has presented possibilities to the town in the form of tourism and money coming from across the border, but, especially in the aftermath of the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the proximity of the country also presents a threat. This documentary gives voices to those living near the border of an aggressive neighbouring country.

A local pizza place owner, journalist, and even the municipal manager are introduced. They reminisce about trips to St. Petersburg and contemplate a move away from an aging town, where “everybody knows everybody.” At the same time, inhabitants learn Russian and get down on the dance floor. Members of the independent Parikkala group follow the results harmoniously on election night, drinking their coffees with a hint of irony from cups adorned with images of Trump and Putin. Local buffaloes also get their moment in the spotlight.

In the Borderland is recommended watching for anyone living in the Helsinki metropolitan area bubble. It provides a perspective on Finland beyond the border of the Ring III highway, on districts out of the public consciousness that are struggling to stay afloat. These towns and their residents are as much a part of the nation as any bigger cities.
