A poem, a documentary and a cinematic walking tour all in one, I Am Belfast is in essence a love letter from the filmmaker Mark Cousins to his home city. With the camera focussed on an elderly lady as she wanders through the city’s streets and suburbs, Cousins narrates her journey commenting on the landscape, architecture and people she views and meets on her way. With the images prompting different memories and emotions, the film travels through joyous reflections on the city’s enduring spirit to sensitive contemplation of its past and the tragedy caused by the troubles. Straddling documentary and artist film, this is a creative and fascinating document of a city through the eyes of a passionate citizen.
