Every now and then the work seems like fighting windmills, that is harvesters, other times it pays off with victories in form of new protected reserves. Quite often they are met only with middle-aged men with their empty stares or patronising gazes.

Different generations and their sets of values clash in this documentary by director Virpi Suutari, who has been granted DocPoint’s Apollo Award. The conservation of nature is like a game in which everyone, including the police and the lumberjacks, know their part and their lines. Ida and Minka have to gain their ground slowly in order to change things. In a male-dominated field, on both sides of the cause, they also need to come across as convincing.

In their love and knowledge of nature, Ida and Minka experience their surroundings with their every sense. Magical scenes of wandering in the woods and diving into the lakes continue the finest traditions of nature documentaries, adding the human as part of the nature. These scenes show touchingly what the activists are fighting for. A special mention goes to the distinguished nature cinematographer Teemu Liakka who is behind the overall wonderful aesthetic of the film.

Laura Manninen (translated by Kati Kiviniemi)

Director Virpi Suutari will open the screening on 5.2.

A Finnish-language audio description for the visually impaired is available for the film via the free MovieReading app.

["post-858","movies","type-movies","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
