“There’s so much crazy shit, that it’s hard to know where to start.” These are the words of Allison Adonizio, a Harvard microbiologist hired by John McAfee to research natural medicine in the jungle – work that would end with her accusing him of rape. McAfee, quite the paranoid narcissist, is the brain behind the famous antivirus software bearing his own name. He is not, however, your stereotypical programmer: in 2000 McAfee founded a cultlike yoga and meditation center in Colorado and later moved to Belize where he had his own army of street thugs and a harem of teenage girls. This story also has a place for guns, drugs, poisoned dogs, murder investigations, an escape, a DUI, a casual scat sex fetish – and McAfee running for President of the United States in the 2016 election.
Nanette Burstein’s assertive documentary seeks to unravel John McAfee’s tainted past and does it with merit. McAfee’s e-mails to Burstein are somewhat threatening and very contradictory: the man declines to be interviewed but still needs to have his say.
