Doing Good

In Snåsa, Norway, the healer and clairvoyant Joralf Gjerstad is a local legend. Many know him better as the Snåsamannen or Snåsakaill’n.

During the last 65 years, more than 50 000 people have travelled to see Gjerstad and seek help for their plight. Some have their youth ruined by bullies; some have their health destroyed by a sudden illness. The meetings themselves are ordinary; nothing at all seems to happen. Still, many find ease to their pains, and a person suffering from a poor self-esteem is finally able to sing in front of the camera.

Director Margaret Olin‘s warm-hearted documentary takes us to 22 meetings with the old healer. Snåsamannen doesn’t charge anything for his services. He says that his gift comes straight from God.

A modern sceptic can question and criticize the healing business – and for a reason. But perhaps there are also things that society can learn from this old man. For sometimes, when people are told that they have a power within them, they can do wonderful things.
